  1. Well the photo is of Smith St you can see the playhouse Cinema nearest and the other cinemas further down. It looks as if that building is in Aliwal St round the corner but Im not sure.

  3. This photo is similar to one of my great grandfathers, which he took during ww2. It's a photo of the Mayfair hotel and playhouse cinema, taken from the City Gardens in Durban :)

  4. Just reading my Grandfather's diary from 1942. He went to the Mayfair for a meeting and then to the Playhouse Grill/Cinema for a meal and a film. Thanks for posting the photo.

  6. Just found a photograph of the Mayfair Hotel taken in 1948 when we stayed there. I think the property must have been redeveloped a bit and is, as suggested on the corner of Samora Machel Street and Margaret Mncadi Avenue.

  7. When our family first arrived in South Africa in 1966 from England my father Tom Cherrington (pianist, singer and entertainer) worked as a musician at the Mayfair Hotel and had a trio in the Supper Club, where one went for dinner, dance and to watch cabaret. The first cabaret artist I remember seeing there was Des Lindberg who walked onto the dance floor with his guitar singing "We are marching to Pretoria ...". My father was also a great copy artist and did paintings for all of the rooms in the hotel, including a large 3 piece mural of Picasso's three musicians which hung in the supper club. Wonderful memories.

    1. Hi Sue, I’ve just seen your post - my Dad owned the Mayfair around then and must have known your father well. I remember going there as a kid and the resident trio with the cabaret acts. Great to hear you have fond memories of those times.

  8. This hotel was/is on the corner of Albany grove next to the Playhouse in Durban. I think it changed its name to The Albany.
